While formal classroom learning will always be needed, learning through a self-selection of technology-skills apps that are readily available, can take on a much-needed supplementary role. This site has been designed for those individuals who would prefer an alternative learning method than classroom learning, especially for high-tech skills-development. In addition, this site has also been designed for businesses who do not have the time, effort, and high budget required for classroom training. Self-selection of technology, skill-building apps can allow any business, even a very small one, to provide a method for their employees to “skill-up.”
Since the learning apps categorized on this website have been developed for K – 12 students, they are relatively inexpensive and simple to use. People are able to start at the level that is most appropriate for them — from introductory, primary school levels (grades K – 8) to intermediate/advanced, secondary school levels (9 – 12 (and post-secondary). It is true that there currently exist many commercial on-line learning programs for technology skills. However, these programs are mostly directed to highly educated professionals. Technology-skills apps that are currently used within public schools (K – 12), but which are now available through this site, can allow anyone to gain skills, even for those without a college degree.
Specifically, this site contains technology, skill-building apps in the areas of STEM and STEAM. STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and generally includes the ‘hard tech’ areas of computers and robotics. STEAM refers to Science, Technology Engineering, Art, and Math and generally includes the creative technology apps that are used to create or build things. Of course, it is not simply enough to learn a technology skill, there needs to be a clear objective for the learning. Thus, this site allows for personalized portfolios that highlight project-based-learning that was done when learning the technology skills. By learning skills through a STEM or STEAM app, and then by applying those skills to a self-directed project that is based on a real-world need, it will allow anyone to acquire the desired but targeted technology skills.
Projects can be self-selected by individuals based on interests or goals, or projects can be derived from work-tasks utilized within business and industry. Completed projects can be shared on a project-feed for others to view and use. In all cases, skill-building projects, based on skills gained from the app tutorials, will have allowed technology skills to be immediately applied, making them much more likely to be understood and retained. And badges can be earned for completing projects which can be used for the presentation of the skills acquired to all.
This site is designed to benefit everyone, no matter at what level their education or work background resides. Simply view the Ed Tech Directory page to find an educational technology app according to the helpful categories of STEM and STEAM. After selection, the app can be purchased from the producer via a link, and electronic badges will be included with each purchase that can be connected to a project file.
